Selling Articles

Dudspuds is an online marketplace where fantasy sports publishers sell individual articles. Think of it like iTunes, but for articles.  If you’re a publisher of premium content, there’s plenty of upside and little risk to trying this approach.

Benefits of Selling Individual Articles

There are several important benefits to selling articles individually.

  • More exposure for your brand and content
  • Consumers can “try before they buy”
  • New funnel of potential subscribers
  • New incremental revenue opportunity

Articles to Sell

Here are some ideas for the types of premium articles to consider selling. These articles should perform well, because they provide in-depth, useful information that helps people make decisions.

  • Sit/Start Reports
  • Game or Player Match Up Analysis
  • Cheat Sheets
  • Player Rankings
  • Player, Rookie or Team Capsules
  • Sleeper Reports
  • Trade Analysis and Valuations
  • Situational Analysis for specific players
  • Injury Analysis
  • Training Camp Analysis (trends, coaching decisions, etc.)

Articles to Avoid

These articles aren’t specific enough, and they compete with many other free outlets.

  • Mainstream topics being discussed elsewhere for free
  • High-level commentary/editorial (if the guys on ESPN or NBC are talking about it, it’s probably not going to sell)
  • General articles that broadly cover many players or teams (we recommend breaking them down into player/position/team pieces and including your analysis)

Selling Suggestions

Here are some suggestions on the what, when and how of selling articles.

  • Articles should include useful, premium content that isn’t available for free
  • Keep articles targeted
  • Offer timely articles throughout the year (pre-season, weekly, day-to-day)
  • Use a title that describes the article and its contents
  • Use a synopsis to describe the article in more detail
  • Link players and teams to your articles
  • Be realistic about what an individual article is worth to a consumer
  • Link to your articles from your website so people can buy them, if they aren’t ready to subscribe (”try before you buy”)

Pricing Articles

You set the prices for your articles. While we aren’t pricing experts — we can give you some suggestions to consider.

  • Most content should be priced between $0.10 and $1.00
  • Short, succinct articles should be priced low – making it easier for readers to buy more of them
  • Longer multi-part articles with deeper analysis will justify a higher price
  • More specialized or targeted articles may justify a higher price since there are less outlets to get this unique analysis
  • Experiment with the price, to see if you get better results at different price points

Getting Paid

When you sell content in the marketplace, you receive a royalty on every sale. You can earn anywhere from 50% to 80% of the sales price. Your royalty is calculated based on our Royalty Program. Every sale will show up in your account’s transaction history. You can run sales performance reports anytime to help you understand which articles are selling the best. Keep in mind that content sold exclusively on Dudspuds will earn you higher royalties. This means you’re not offering the content anywhere else.

Dudspuds distributes royalty payments to publishers at the beginning of each month via PayPal. You will not be charged PayPal fees when you receive your royalty payments.
